Tkoa Desert

To the Backyard of the Holy City

Join the kings and prophets of Jerusalem seeking refuge and inspiration in the Judean Desert. It is only a 15 minutes’ drive from the holy city of Jerusalem to the glorious cliffs and valleys breaking down into the Desert. It is to here that our prophets, kings and rebels escaped when seeking refuge from the threats in Jerusalem in bad times; but it is also the place where they found quiet, inspiration, and connection to God, and renewed their strength to complete their role in Jerusalem’s destiny. On this day trip we will climb to the magnificent Herodion Fortress built in the middle of the desert 2000 years ago, follow the trail of the Jewish rebels who used this fortress as their stronghold while fighting the Romans for the freedom of Jerusalem. Alternatively we can choose to hike the Tkoa valley of Amos the prophet, and visit the caves where the rebels hid between battles. At the Tkoa Artist Center and the farm at the edge of the desert we will have an authentic experience meeting the modern settlers who are fulfilling the prophesy of prophet Amos who lived on that very same mountain 2500 years before them. "And I will turn the captivity of My people Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them, and I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be plucked up out of their land which I have given them, saith the Lord thy God".
